People don’t always enjoy talking about it, but there are a myriad of ways your toilet can start acting up. If it’s prone to running for long periods or you suspect it’s leaking, here are some things you can do to help the issue yourself:
Toilet Installation and Replacement
If fixing the toilet isn’t an option, or you’re adding on or remodeling, here are some things you should consider when choosing a new toilet:
Bowl shape is one of the more obvious decisions to make. Toilets can be round or elongated. The former is ideal for smaller spaces, while the latter is more comfortable for many people.
You’ll also want to check the rough-in for the bathroom. That’s the distance from the wall to the center of the sewer pipe. A 12-inch rough-in is standard, but some homes (particularly older ones) may have different rough-ins, so measure ahead of time.
Another consideration is the height. Standard toilets are 14 to 15 inches, while 16.5 inches is ideal for anyone with limited mobility — and it’s ADA compliant.
Another concern is water efficiency. All toilets have to meet certain standards for conservation (using no more than 1.6 gallons per flush) but some are designed to be even more economical, including dual-flush models.
Another concern is the design of the toilet: they may come in two parts with the bowl and tank separate, or as one seamless unit. Two-piece designs are more common, but one-piece toilets are often easier to clean.
Finally, for a cohesive look consider upgrading the toilet’s trip lever to coordinate with the other fixtures in your bathroom.
