Troubleshooting Gas Stoves
Start by making sure that the stove is plugged in and the gas valves are open. Once you’ve verified that, unplug the range to do any further repairs.
Oven Won’t Heat: One of the most basic problems is the igniter not working. Even if you do see a glow from the igniter, it could be faulty.
Burner Won’t Ignite: You can eliminate some simple causes first. Start by cleaning the burner holes and the igniter. Lift the burner cap up and clear any debris. Clean the igniter, which should be a ceramic nub at the base of the burner. Clogs can occur in the burner holes. You can clear these using a needle.
If you have a gas stove without electronic ignition (likely if you have an older model), you may also want to check the pilot lights. If you have an electronic ignition, try turning the burner on. If you hear the click, the problem could be the pilot light electrode, which may need cleaning.
Troubleshooting Electric Stoves
Burner not working: Check for signs of scorching or being pitted. Replace the burner. You can remove the burner by lifting it slightly and pulling it out of the socket. Some burners may require you to wiggle them or even remove a screw.
You can also troubleshoot the burners by switching them out. If switching the burners doesn’t work, the problem may actually be the socket. Inspect the socket and look for scorch marks.
If the burner doesn’t turn on at all and it’s neither the burner nor the socket, it could be a burnt-out infinite switch, which will need to be replaced.
Oven Not Working: An easy way to diagnose the problem is to check whether the broiler is working. If the broiler works but the oven doesn’t, it’s likely the heating element or the receptacle it plugs into.
Broiler and Oven Not Working: If neither the oven nor the broiler works, it could be an issue with the clock timer. In newer electric stoves, this element is typically combined with the thermostat and needs replacement.
Switching from Electric to Gas?
Gas stoves are the preferred choice in professional kitchens for a reason. Gas cooks food evenly and the heat control is easier. If your old electric stove finally bit the dust and you’re ready to upgrade, let us handle the installation. We can route the gas lines and install your new gas stove, no problem.
