Signs That Your Garbage Disposal Needs Repairs:
There are a few different signs your garbage disposal isn’t working, the most obvious being it not turning on. You can troubleshoot the issue yourself, but always take safety measures. Never put your hand in the garbage disposal, even to fish something out.
A garbage disposal that doesn’t turn on typically indicates an electrical problem. This could be because the disposal overloaded and shorted the circuits, or because the machine tripped the circuit breaker. Press the reset button on your disposal and reset the breaker.
A garbage disposal that turns on but doesn’t grind food indicates a stuck flywheel or locked-up motor. You’ll notice constant humming noise. Look for a hex hole (6-sided) on the bottom of your garbage disposal. Insert a hex wrench into that hole and rotate in a circle both clockwise and counter-clockwise to free it up.
A leaky garbage disposal indicates busted hoses or seals. You’ll need to pinpoint the source of the water to identify the solution. The solution may be more plumbers’ putty, or tightening the clamps and bolts on the disposal.
A garbage disposal that makes loud noises may have something stuck in it. Use tongs to fish out objects made of plastic, metal, or glass, or fibrous food waste (such as banana peels). If this doesn’t work the machine may need a replacement.
Avoid Putting These Things Into Your Garbage Disposal
What you don’t put into your garbage disposal is as important as what you put in. To keep your disposal in optimal shape, there are a few things you should avoid:
Instead, two ways you can help maintain your disposal are by regularly grinding lemon peels or ice in the machine.
To eliminate odors, combine a couple handful of baking soda with a half cup of vinegar in the hopper of your garbage disposal. Allow it to sit and foam with the machine turned off. When the foaming is finished, rinse it down the drain with running water.
